Springfield Hospital Center, a psychiatric facility operated by the Maryland Department of Health, has several unused buildings that have deteriorated over time, creating environmental risks and safety concerns. The site was active with ongoing healthcare operations nearby, requiring strict control over access, air quality, and noise.

  • Full containment setup with negative air pressure and MDE oversight

Universal Waste Removal

  • Exit signs, mercury thermostats, fluorescent tubes, and electrical components

  • Packaged and disposed of according to EPA and Maryland regulations

Site Restoration

  • Grading and backfill to eliminate trip hazards

  • Installation of seed and straw to stabilize soil and promote regrowth

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge

The building was adjacent to an active patient care area and within a historically significant campus.

Solution

RemacUSA implemented quiet equipment staging, used wet methods to control dust, and coordinated demolition hours around hospital activities. Demolition was sequenced to avoid vibration near operational buildings.

Additionally, proper documentation was provided to preserve historical records of the site prior to demolition.

Final Outcome

The abandoned structure was safely removed, environmental hazards mitigated, and the site restored: all with no safety incidents or regulatory violations.

MDDGS praised RemacUSA’s attention to safety, clear communication with facility staff, and ability to manage sensitive work near healthcare environments.
