Retired Railcar Disposal Project
WMATA began retiring its legacy 2K, 3K, 4K, %k, 6K, & 7K series railcars as part of a fleet modernization effort.
REMAC was contracted to support the safe handling, decontamination, and transportation of these massive railcars from designated WMATA yards to authorized recycling and disposal facilities.
The Carmen E. Turner Maintenance and Training Facility, located in Landover, MD, required a multi-phase interior strip-out to support infrastructure upgrades and mechanical modernization.
REMAC was selected to perform a controlled interior demolition of aging mechanical systems, wall partitions, ceilings, and abatement of hazardous materials while the facility remained partially active.
SERVICES INCLUDED:
1. Railcar preparation and decontamination
2. Heavy equipment staging and lift coordination
3. Transportation of oversized loads to metal salvage yards
4. Environmental documentation and chain of custody compliance
5. Recycling of ferrous and non-ferrous components
REMAC complied with all WMATA safety protocols and Department of Transportation (DOT) transport regulations, ensuring safe and timely removal of railcars with minimal disruption to rail yard operations.
Project Outcomes
Hundreds of tons of obsolete rolling stock safely removed and recycled, supporting WMATA’s green initiatives and site clearance goals.
WMATA project managers commended REMAC’s ability to handle complex transit-related demolition with precision, safety, and environmental responsibility.
